Build a repeatable lab scope diagnostic process for modern vehicles.

About The Nerd Series: Nerd I

Nerd 1 is designed to help working automotive technicians develop a practical, repeatable approach to diagnosing modern vehicles, with a strong emphasis on using lab scopes (digital storage oscilloscopes) as a primary diagnostic tool. The course moves beyond generic troubleshooting charts and focuses on building your own diagnostic process, so you can confidently tackle complex drivability and performance issues—even when symptoms or vehicles are unfamiliar.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to test and interpret oxygen sensors and fuel control systems, understand different types of injector drivers, and use lab scopes to diagnose electrical and mechanical faults in injectors. A major portion of the course is dedicated to creative and effective lab scope techniques: setting up your scope for reliable captures, understanding sampling and resolution limits, avoiding common pitfalls like aliasing and capture errors, and applying these skills to real-world problems such as intermittent faults, sensor issues, and ignition problems. By the end, you’ll be able to use a lab scope with greater confidence, design smarter test procedures, and make diagnostic decisions based on evidence rather than guesswork or unnecessary parts replacement.

What you'll learn

In this course, you will learn a practical, hands-on approach to diagnosing modern vehicles, with a focus on using lab scopes (digital storage oscilloscopes) as your main diagnostic tool. The course is designed to help you move beyond generic troubleshooting charts and develop your own diagnostic process, so you can confidently solve complex drivability and performance problems—even on unfamiliar vehicles.

Here’s what will be covered:

  • An introduction to the course philosophy and why building your own diagnostic habits is more effective than following generic procedures.
  • How oxygen sensors work, how they affect fuel control, and how to accurately test different types of O2 sensors.
  • Common O2 sensor failure modes and how to avoid diagnostic traps, including issues related to EGR and fuel trim.
  • A series of modules on creative lab scope techniques, including:
    • Setting up your scope for reliable signal captures.
    • Understanding how digital scopes sample and display signals, and how to use cursors for accurate measurements.
    • Recognizing and avoiding errors caused by sampling limits, memory depth, and aliasing (when a scope misrepresents a fast signal).
    • Practical strategies for testing sensors, ignition, and intermittent faults using the scope.
    • How to interpret what you see on the scope and avoid mistakes that can lead to unnecessary parts replacement.
  • Detailed instruction on analyzing fuel injectors with the scope:
    • Identifying different injector driver types and their waveforms.
    • Using voltage and current patterns to separate electrical and mechanical injector faults.
    • Real-world diagnostic techniques for dead cylinders, intermittent injector issues, and comparing injector performance without traditional balance tests.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to use a lab scope more effectively, design smarter test procedures, and make diagnostic decisions based on real evidence. The goal is to help you become more confident and efficient in diagnosing today’s “computers on wheels,” saving time and reducing guesswork in the shop.
