This module covers DSO (digital storage oscilloscope) sample rate performance in depth, giving you the tools to mathematically evaluate and compare scope performance rather than relying on manufacturer specs alone.

Key topics include:

  • How buffer size and time base determine true sample rate at any given setting
  • Using the Auto Nerds DSO sample rate calculator to find the limits of your scope and compare instruments
  • How min/max (glitch capture) strategies work and what they can and cannot do
  • Fast time base limits and the concept of "fantasy sampling"
  • How sample rate is affected when running multiple channels
  • Vertical resolution and what bit depth means for waveform detail

Practical demonstrations are performed using a Fluke 97 and a PicoScope 3423, comparing how each instrument handles a 170-microsecond voltage dropout signal across a range of time bases.
