This module covers several operator awareness topics and practical labscope diagnostic techniques.

The first section addresses image overlay (the "Homer Principle"), where partial traces from separate captures merge on screen, creating misleading or physically impossible waveforms.

The module then moves into variable reluctance (VRS) sensor behavior, covering:

  • How to identify floating vs. non-floating ground sensors
  • How scope hookup method affects pattern amplitude and ground reference
  • When to dedicate a single channel across the sensor vs. referencing vehicle ground
  • How hookup strategy depends on what information you're after

The remainder of the module is a broad overview of real-world diagnostic applications, using case studies to illustrate how creative labscope technique can solve problems that traditional diagnostic procedures cannot. Applications touched on include intermittent no-start diagnosis, fuel pump commutator analysis with a low amp probe, primary ignition drive integrity, coil current analysis, and secondary ignition firing line analysis including rotor gap and distributor phasing issues.
