This module expands on creative lab scope technique by applying it to a variety of real-world diagnostic scenarios beyond ignition systems. Tom walks through how the scope and amp probe can be used to diagnose electrical motor circuits, fuel injection issues, vehicle speed sensor faults, ABS wheel speed sensors, TPS sweep testing, and multiplex window control systems.
Key topics covered include:
- Using a current probe to identify an underrated OEM circuit causing repeated fuse failures
- Diagnosing a fuel injection dropout traced to an invalid VSS signal triggering a road speed fuel cut
- Identifying low-amplitude and erratic VSS signals affecting speedometer operation
- Understanding why DC coupling should be used when examining AC waveforms
- Cam and crank sensor synchronization using the scope in place of dedicated special tools
- Creating your own diagnostic procedure when factory procedures don't exist
The module wraps up with a series of ASE-style questions covering oxygen sensors, fuel pressure, and TFI ignition systems, reinforcing the importance of understanding computer strategies and thinking outside the box rather than relying on trouble charts.
