Tom wraps up the Nerd Series with two real-world diagnostic case studies, then closes with a summary of the core philosophy behind effective lab scope diagnostics.

The case studies cover:

  • An 86 LeBaron 2.2 Turbo with a failed logic module, including how to use action/reaction testing to isolate the fault and how waveform captures can protect a shop when a vehicle fails during service
  • An 84 Wagoneer with cold-start symptoms misdiagnosed as a choke problem, ultimately traced to a defective MCU using distributor and ignition command waveform analysis

The closing segment reinforces the diagnostic approach taught throughout the series: understanding how a system works, developing your own test strategy, and using the lab scope to follow the electronic trail rather than relying blindly on service procedures. Tom also emphasizes the value of practice time and waveform analysis skills as a career differentiator.
