This module covers the low data rate DIS system on a four-cylinder dual plug application, including block diagram review of key signals (CID, PIP, SPOUT, DPI, IDM) and how they interact. It then transitions into the high data rate EDIS system, covering the 36-1 crank sensor, software-generated PIP, and the spark angle pulse width (SAPW) signal including how to calculate commanded timing from it.
Topics include:
- Dual plug inhibit operation and how to diagnose related codes using action/reaction testing
- A real-world case study involving intermittent ignition loss under snap acceleration, and the diagnostic reasoning used to identify a failing coil as the root cause
- High data rate EDIS crankshaft sensor waveform interpretation, including floating sensor hookup considerations
- SAPW formula and a provided chart for converting pulse width to spark advance degrees
- Camshaft position sensor role in sequential injection and the consequences of it being out of sync
- A brief introduction to IEDIS, where ICM functions are integrated into the PCM
