This module covers integrated EDIS ignition systems, using a 2001 Windstar V6 as a hands-on example for accessing coil primary signals at the PCM. Tom demonstrates current probe placement strategy to minimize RFI interference and walks through reading coil current signatures on a lab scope.
The bulk of the module focuses on synchronizing hall effect and VRS-style camshaft position sensors on 6-cylinder EDIS systems, including:
- Setting cam sensor rise/fall edges relative to the crankshaft signal (26 degrees ATDC for hall effect, 22 degrees for VRS)
- Using companion cylinders as an alternative sync reference
- Understanding PIP window tolerances for 4, 6, 8, and 10-cylinder applications
- Identifying a 180-degree out-of-phase cam sensor installation and its driveability symptoms
- Using a 4-channel scope to confirm cam sensor phasing without pulling plugs
Additional examples cover a 4-cylinder 1.9, a V8, and a V10 with a 40-1 crank sensor. Tom also demonstrates how a 4-channel setup can reveal ignition advance, injection timing shifts with RPM, and alternator diode ripple causing P0340 cam sensor codes.
