Part 6
This training is available to members of Nerdzgroup.
This module wraps up the Ford chapter with two real-world case studies that put cam/crank synchronization diagnostics into practice.
The first case involves a 97 Explorer with a 5.0L V8 presenting with hesitation and misfire. The scanner is misidentifying cylinders, but no cam sensor codes are stored. A 4-channel scope capture is used to reveal that the camshaft position sensor is rising at the wrong point in the engine cycle, causing the PCM to misidentify cylinders and sequence injection incorrectly. The module walks through exactly how the PCM interprets the bad input, which cylinders get swapped, and why the ignition is unaffected while injection is completely out of sync.
The second case covers a 99 Escort ZX2 with variable cam timing and camshaft position sensor codes. Scope analysis of the cam/crank relationship points toward a timing belt issue rather than a faulty actuator, and the diagnosis is confirmed and resolved with a belt replacement.
The module closes with a summary of key diagnostic principles from the Ford chapter, including:
- Knowing the system before you start testing
- Keeping action/reaction test channels as close to the source as possible
- Using the DSO to validate mechanical relationships and check circuit integrity
- Not relying on stored codes to lead you to synchronization problems
