This module covers the relative compression and battery charging/starting system test using a Pico scope — one of the most beginner-friendly and practical tests you can perform with a scope.
Trevor walks through the full process: connecting a high amp clamp and battery voltage leads, configuring a single-edge trigger to capture the start event, and interpreting the resulting waveform. You'll learn how to read:
- Battery voltage drop during cranking
- Starter motor inrush current and amp draw
- Cylinder compression humps in the current pattern
- Alternator charging behavior after startup
- Cranking RPM using time cursors
The module also covers how to perform a relative compression test by disabling the ignition and fuel systems and cranking the engine. These tests are presented as foundational skills that build toward more advanced scope captures.
