The school where I work has a few 3423 automotive kits
What school would that be? We have support colleges all over the continent.

is there a way to determine, in advance, the maximum recording time for a specific time base and sample rate?
Yes, we have charts for that available to our Picogroup members. PicoScope assistance is provided in the Picogroup members only areas, but I can give you a couple of pointers.

I am currently sampling @300Kbs
If you are referring to your requested number of samples, then turn that up to the max. With a 3423, you should just leave that there all the time. If you want a seamless recording, choose a time base for the time desired so that you have it all on one screen.
For example, a 1000 second capture time (over 16.6 minutes @ 100s/div) will render a sample interval of 477 microseconds or about 2kHz using a 3423.
Might be time to think about upgrading those with us. Then you would have access to the Picogroup resources.
