Help picking low amp clamp
Jan 27th, 2024 at 12:52pm

Newbie here, just ordered a Picoscope 4425a starter kit for automotive diagnostics.  I am going to need a low and high amp current clamp soon, and am confused about the different applications for the TA496 vs the TA473.

I've searched this forum and seen traces that suggest the two clamps perform very similar.  How would I go about choosing between the two?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I use the TA388 2000 amp clamp for almost everything.
What are you primarily using the scope for?

I think the usual suspects: virtual compression check, battery drain, fuel injection, coil on plug ignition, alternator output, etc.  I'm trying to enhance my diagnosis and repair capabilities on the daily drivers.  But I am also building a race car with standalone ecu and AiM power distribution module, so I'll want to check the low-amp circuits as I build that project car up.

Battery draw is the only thing I see the 2000 amp clamp isn’t good for. That clamp has surprisingly good resolution down low. Trevor has a thread on it somewhere here in the forums.
As far as battery drains I use a shunt resistor for that. I also have a KEMC k100 0-4 amp clamp that has resolution for draws.

Here is a link to the thread where I compared the low current clamps.
