NVH Question ??
Aug 21st, 2015 at 8:12am

I work as shop foreman in a Maserati dealership, and Maserati was kind enough to force feed us a PicoScope which includes an accelerometer pickup used for driveline balancing. My question is whether or not this pickup could be used with the new NVH software for general vibration diagnosis, and further is this software freely downloadable and functional with the PicoScope from Maserati. Not expecting a definite answer right off the rip, but maybe Tom could weigh in on this......

Thanks in advance,

The software is free, the NVH kit will need to be licensed to a specific Pico scope, what's the part number of the accelerometer?  Is it the standard T143?

Hi Preston,
A little more info here for you. The accelerometer is a B&K 4508. The Picoscope is a 4323/02. The cable for the accelerometer is a coax with connector for the accelerometer and a BNC for the scope. The Maserati software also uses an optical pickup for position reference on the driveshaft flange for specific weight nuts that are installed on studs made onto the driveshaft flange bolts. I was hoping that I could use the accelerometer/scope and the NVH software without buying any new hardware.

Do you know if the NVH you have has to be license to the PICO unit you own?

Being as the software is free I would just give it a shot and see.

Thanks.  Yeah, that's nothing that I'm familiar with, so I'd have to look up the information for it.

https://www.picotech.com/downloads

Although I don't see the scope you have listed, and I thought Tom said something about NVH not even being an option in the Pico Diagnostics software that comes with the download.

Your scope is a specialty production unit with special software for the OEM.

To use NVH with the standard production unit, you need the NVH kit with the interface box.

As for the software, the current release Pico Diagnostics included with the 6.10.18.149 is missing the NVH capability.  The current beta 6.11.5.1066 version has it though.

Thanks Tom,
As I suspected, the scope we have is not supported in the latest software (I tried it, but not the Beta). I did however try the accelerometer in the Maserati scope software, and indeed I can get a pattern just tapping it on my bench. Are you aware of any "free" software out there for NVH?? Please don't be offended, as I know the best solution is a new scope and NVH kit from AutoNerdz, just being the typical tech looking to make something work with what I have on hand........and thanks for taking the time to respond!!

Right.  That OEM scope works with the OEM software.

I don't know of any free NVH software other than Pico.  The Pico NVH kit can be paired with one automotive scope for free.  Then, that even costs hundreds of $$ each to pair it with additional scopes.
