Pico Scope software requirements
Aug 31st, 2013 at 6:12pm

Hi everyone, I am looking at laptops and comparing and I have some questions.  Which processor should I get?  I don't know what processors have the minimum requirements for the software to work.  Also, it says on the faq page that it requires 315 MB for the install.  Are we talking about the size of the hard drive?  Just trying to compare different laptops.  I'm looking to spend 500 bucks at most for a laptop if the laptop that was donated to me doesn't cut the mustard.  And by next Thursday, I will own a 4 channel HD Pico Scope Kit from Autonerdz.  Woo Hoo!

The program install size it how much space is needed for the program.

A 2Ghz processor is highly recommended due to the resources Picoscope uses.  It can run on slower processors, but it can be problematic.  This is were the numbers can be tricky, though.  Many of the Core processors from Intel say they are under 2Ghz when, in reality, they are quite capable (ie. the 3rd generation i3, i5, etc.).  However, since it sounds as though you're talking about older computers, just try to get something 2Ghz or higher.  For example, there are many laptops with Core2Duo processors that can get the job done.

Now, when it comes to RAM, get as much as the computer can support (32bit operating systems can usually only take 4 Gig of RAM max).  Either get one that already has lots of RAM, or be sure to get one that can be upgraded to lots of RAM.

Congrats on your decision to join the Picogroup!!

What are the specs on the laptop you have? I had pico on a laptop with 1.33GHz Core2Duo processor with 2GB ram- it was adequate. Pico was a bit smoother when I got a used Toughbook (CF-74 mk3) with 2.0GHz C2D & 4GB ram (& I got a solid state drive which make this laptop FLY).
