What's PITTED ? How do you know the heads are good and why are you replacing the cam and rockers ?

I think he means the cams themselves are pitted, would need new cam(s) and rockers. If memory serves VIN "N" is a 4.7L

Man you aren't the first to notice that, I guess it ain't new to me.

Sorry guys I never realized I hadn't included the engine.

Ward your 100% spot on. The problem resolved itself today when the owner decided to pony up for new after he did a search on e-bay and found out he really wouldn't save any real money and may inherit more grief.

I just figure the bad spots on the cams ruined their mating rocker. Aren't rockers cheaper by the dozen anyway? Cheesy

Machinist "Said So" after he die checked and flattened em back out.

Hello Lew! Not that I don't trust your machine shop, but if the head needed to be "flattened back out" was the engine run too hot? These heads apparently have issues with intake valve seats "falling out" on engines that got too hot. I assume he's aware of this and checked it but it can't hurt to ask.

As a matter of fact Ward he is the one that brought that very topic up, and insisted we do the FULL DEAL on this set. What he didn't mention was the area where the roller travels being worn in like a Wagon Wheel Rut in a dirt road, or little chunks of the cams disappearing to abyss, Great point.  I have very little exposure to this platform, so his and your advice is taken seriously. Guide issues were also discussed, and I've not found a 4.7 happy owner, I'm sure somebody got lucky somewhere.  Do ya suppose Dodge management was tired of Ford getting all that Free Publicity over the 5.4??

This particular engine, like the 2.7 (shudder) that went before it, were not Dodge's finest hour. I have had friends that owned both these engines, and were meticulous with oil changes and maintenance, who never had an issue and put many miles on them, but
that level of care is the exception rather than the rule for most of the motoring public. Like the 5.4 they need their oil changes, but at least you can get the spark plugs out! Smiley

That's my plan for my 4.7L   Smiley

If anything happens it will make for some fun BLS captures.   Smiley

Good morning Lew!
Have you found some bumpsticks yet for that 4.7?
I'll be trolling a couple wrecking yards saturday for
bits and pieces for my carb to fuel injection conversion, if you want I can add the cams to my shoppin' list. -Ward-

Thanks for the offer Ward, I called every yard in our directory and searched Car-part.com and spoke to the sales counter at LKQ. not one will separate the cams from the heads, even on a toasted engine going in as a core.

Just now massaging the cams into time and torque, then it should be a downhill path.

Hi Lew,

I don't blame them for that.  Those cams are line-bored.  It's not a good idea to put used cams into those heads (don't ask me how I know, lol).

I never gave that a thought, darn it  Smiley and really figured anything for controlling a shaft was line bored, cam, crank journals, even the old rocker shaft towers had to be pretty even. So I didn't think about used cams causing a problem, Hope the new ones don't give me grief, I wonder now if I shoulda plastigaged em in a few spots. (Second Guessin myself) Now I'm gettin skeert.
