Can you have too much scope power?

Perhaps you have heard that you don't need a lot of scope power to see everything you might need to see on vehicles. That small glitches which happen very fast are not significant because the PCM either ignores them or can't react to them anyway.

That argument has been put to rest a long time ago but the following movie is just another nail in the coffin. It also gives you a really good feel for how powerful PicoScope really is.

This is a case that we examined in 'Group Therapy With The Picotologist' a couple of months ago and It was such a goodie that I asked Dave Foye if I could use it in a movie.

I think you will enjoy it...It's about 30 minutes long.

Excellent demonstration on how that extra power does come in handy.

Perhaps we'll never know what the cause was exactly for the glitch in the CMP signal input to the PCM. The 3000 was able to pick it out with a 5 second sweep though. That is what is so nice about the 3000 series scopes. No need to worry about losing detail at the long time-bases.

I wonder if rotor phasing might have caused this. It does appear to be adjustable. I'm not so sure we could use a scan tool to check it since there is no CKP input. I'm having a tendency to believe that the extra rotor to distributor terminal distance during firing caused an excess HT flash into the optical sensor.

The power transistor was only doing what it was told to do, so I don't think that could be it.

This whole process on this tool has been a bit of an embarrassment. Embarrassed

It was announced in one of big magazines top 20 tools and that was months ago. It is still not available. I wouldn't hold my breath. I have no idea if or when it will be released.

At least one vendor I know of has it for sale on their site but it is not really available. We don't put anything on our site until it is actually available and has earned the Autonerdz seal of approval.

When we actually have a production unit here, we will evaluate it and then decide if we will carry it.

It is a really good idea and the prototype we have looks promising. We'll see.
