hi all about to purchase pico and possibly FLS  how would the unit perform on the complex diesels we have in the uk ie cyl recognition  as inj wiring is often inside cambox and when using fls on petrol angines and ascertaining fuel flow per cylinder how would this be achieved as most vehicles have the pressure reg in the tank as there is no return line

Hi Big Duke,

Let me offer my 2 cents since no one else has jumped in...

As for the units performance, it will out perform everything else in its class. As for will it do what your looking for, that is a question of application that applies to all tools in this class (a scope)

Are you not able to gather the info your looking for in scan data? Or are you looking for external proof of what you see in scan data? Or are the diesels your working on actually less sophisticated and have no scan data to even look at?

The FLS IMHO has a very limited application but where it is valuable I find it VERY valuable and easily worth the cost.

I have always been fascinated in how things are different in our field between techs in other countries. I wonder sometimes if language is the biggest barrier or the difference in economies.

Duke,

Guys have made adapters for gas applications that are returnless with no accessible pressure regulator that add a regulator to the pressure port to attach the FLS.  The company also makes a fuel dedicated unit for this purpose.

There is a post in the public area that had some pictures of the adapters but it seems they are no longer on the host server.....

(as inj wiring is often inside cambox)what i had to do is get breakout box and cut plastic sheilding to current ramp injectors,on the volvo d12s thats by far the easiest way,wires are in plastic boxes or in a thick rubber tube..........diesels now a days have ultra smart computers, everything is pulsewidth modulated and is closely checked, way easier to scan than scope, .......if you give me some more information on what you plan on using firstlook and pico for in diesel application i'll give opinion or send some waves.............what do you mean by cylinder recognition?

hi what i mean about cyl recognition is how would get i the ref for no1 cyl  do you get at the ecu first or is there a simple connection i am not thinking about ,the main reason iam thinking about fls is so often we see cars with no data stored as other garages have wipped the info . and there may be missfire s etc but a quick way to ascertain wheather ther is a cylinder problem without getting heavily involved ie the number of dual mass faults we see is increasing .injector sevicing is increasing in our shop and curing a lot of weird faults but proof of fuel flow to each cyl would  be usefull

Duke I generally use the cam or crank encoded wave to id #1 cylinder. On older diesels with nozzels I've used a pulse sensing transducer that snap on used to sell that allowed you to connect a timing light to a diesel. You just clamp the transducer around line to the #1 nozzel and the pulse of the pressure in the line during injection triggers a discharge of a capacitor for the signal needed. You can use an inductive pickup on this for a trigger on your scope. Here is a 99 my 5.9 cummins which I'm using the cam signal for a trigger. The green trace is an amp clamp on the electronic injection pump power supply the red trace is the cam sensor,the blue trace is the crank sensor and the tan trace is the first look sensor in the exhaust.
