Title: checking blow by?
Post by daveyK on Sep 9th, 2010 at 6:51am
Hi All,

I was thinking that I could use the WPS or the “Brandon Look” to check for blow by with the engine running and maybe by syncing to a cylinder then be able to see and identify any cylinder with too much.

Will this method work?

Do my thoughts have any merits or flaws?

Has anybody tried this?

If you did try it, what where your results or conclusions?

Thanks,

dave

Hi Dave,

We did some crank case pressure testing in the WPS500 movie in the flash movie tutorial library. Some of the testing included an ignition sync. If you know you have excessive blow by, it might be a good idea to not completely block the crank case vent as we did. Pressure could build quickly and push out a seal before you had a chance to shut it down.

Hi Dave
You should disconnect the PCV valve when you can.

Dave ,here's a capture from early this week.

The vehicle is a 2007 Toyota landcruiser with a 4.5 litre common rail V8 diesel engine.
It's owned by a drilling company that I used to do alot of work for.
To save money, they now do their own maintenance .
They had just serviced it, three hours later the sump plug fell out.
I guess I'll be doing their work again  :-[

It has a loud tap from no.1 cylinder  about camshaft speed ( 46 times in 10 secs.) & a slight miss.
I'm pushed for time to look into it,but took this .

This file is the same vehicle with the Firstlook in the exhaust & partially covered tailpipe  "Brandon style"  ;)

brad, i don't have the firstlook.  so i wanted to ask you if it is normal for a miss to be represented with a rising spike with that tool?  or does that have something to do with the way it was captured?  when i use the bls it shows a negative spike when a miss occurs (as long as i have the leads hooked up properly  :)).
below is a screen shot of your wave.  i added the invert c math to demonstrate what i'm used to seeing with the bls.  what am i missing?

crackerclicker....i was quizing him about this too..... have you ever scoped a early 90's chevy pu the regular way with the deal just stuck in the tailpipe? you wont see negative pulses but you will see positive ones and its hard to tell if its a miss or not...this is what drove me nuts to create new ways of doing exhaust pulse diag...i think he didnt do the paper thing right is what happened..... now on regular pulses that go downward on missfires you'll also see them go high in the positive direction because its a pressure change sensor, think of it as not seeing the negative pulse but seeing the positive return of it....does that make any sense

yep.  that makes sense.  i'm used to seeing the neg pulse first, then a large upward spike.

no its a deal with both more so with the firstlook than mine, as the firstlook is slightly more sensitive in a bad way compaired to my sensor....  i have one of these at the shop we just did heads on if you want me to show you..... about 5-6 years ago when i got my firstlook i could make it work on any car but with pickup trucks it flatout wouldnt give me a negative pulse so i got used to it for awhile until i thougt about the dynamics and came up with a solution
