Title: 96 ranger cmp and ckp capture
Post by jose on Feb 24th, 2004 at 10:10am
Hi guys or Tom

Working on a 96 ranger 2wd ,2.3 dual coil
I need a capture of a cmp and ckp relationship.
If you can supply one it would be great.

Jose

Hi Hose,

I don't have one from that exact application.  Maybe someone does.  In any case, it would be the same as the other 4 cyl EDIS.  I'm showing that CMP as not of the adjustable type.  Are you checking a cam belt allignment?

I show the CMP of the VRS type on that.  The CKP missing tooth is at 90 degrees BTDC and the CMP fall should be near 26 degrees ATDC.  Like this:

Thanks Tom. hopefully some other forum members who do have it can post it

Yes I agree I saw the ford tsb but i'm hesistant to follow tru with it . That's why  I posted here.

Im helping out a fellow tech and the capture is reverse compare to your picture and ford tsb.

he has low vacuum 14-15 psi and comp of 175psi.
checked  for plugged exhaust (removed o2 still runs the same). fuel psi good 34psi

the tsb and your post ,probably is correct .maybe will hunt down another ranger and compare.

Looks like leading to wrong cmp to crank relationship.

Thanks again .

Jose,

I Imagine you have already covered EGR issues.

What exactly is reverse?  If the CKP capture is upside down, then you just stabbed the wrong wire.  The CKP is a floater so, with the scope referenced to vehicle ground, each wire will show a pattern but they will be mirrors of each other.

yes...  we checked egr ...it is ok

our capture ....is the cmp trigger is before ckp missing tooth (7th)...

yes... we are checking  the cam and crank alignment. belt alignment ...

truck came from another shop with a used engine installed.

we will checked the wires we scoped.

Just to update :

Fellow tech got to truck late today and removed t/cover
their's a couple of different marks on cam sprocket and oil pump sprocket(triggers cmp).

It was not obvious until you had shop manual as reference because it was so disceiving.

Anyways scope it again and BAMM!! Same capture as yours Tom and ford TSB.

Thanks again for all your input.  :) :) :) 8)
