For those of you that are downloading this latest release, your default maximum samples per scope trace value has increased from 2500 to 8000. Although this default value is better, your ADC 212/3 is capable of 4 times that amount. I suggest you increase this to 32,000 and use block mode. This will help in showing you very short duration spikes such as secondary ignition firing KV, and the inductive kick voltage when an injector is turned off. Also, try to keep your timebase at 10 mS or less if possible when viewing secondary ignition. I realize trying to get all V-6 or V-8 paraded events on the screen at idle is often not possible. Try to come off idle a bit and you will. The problem with choosing 20mS/div is that the sampling rate roll off becomes apparent in viewing very short duration spikes such as the firing KV section which may be only 10uS. Why? Because this is how DSOs operate. The more time on the screen, the less sampling you have. Some of your injector inductive kicks only last for 50uS. These are only some of the reasons you should be using your PicoScope to it's full potential.

TURNING UP SAMPLES PER SCOPE TRACE

Go to Settings | Options | Advanced and in the box for Maximum samples per scope trace enter 32,000. In the box for slow sampling, click on the down arrow and choose "block mode". Don't worry about the ETS settings, it doesn't apply to the 212/3.

CHART RECORDER

This feature's purpose is for monitoring trends in slowly changing signals. i.e. sound, light, temperature. I use this at times in the automotive field only for Oxygen sensors. The only diagnostic use in this application would be that you know the O2 is in fuel control. Since the sampling rate is slowed down so much, you wont be seeing a hashy O2. Since I rely heavily on what that O2 is doing, most often I'm in block mode with this as well.

Many of you power users already knew this. This post was to inform the new users and some of the ones that haven't found the PicoScope utopia. I hope this was helpful.

Much thanks to Autonerdz for offering this update on his site.

Regards,

Carl
